For 60 years, in the wee hours of the morning, a man dressed in black would come to Westminster Hall and Burying Ground in Baltimore, Maryland. He sought out one grave, that of the great American author, Edgar Allan Poe. There he would leave three roses, a note, and a partially filled bottle of French Cognac, traditionally Martell.

Sadly, there was no Poe Toaster in 2010. It was said that the tradition ended with the 200th anniversary of Poe’s birth, but hopes run anew as fans gather on January 19th to not only pay respect to Poe, but to his toaster.
