A Very Special DnU, part 2: the Corkscrew

A Special PresentationIn the first very special article, I wrote about the creation of two new cocktails, the Peach Melba and the Bunny Wigglesworth. But those were not the first cocktails I drank that night. Rather, let’s go back to how this evening got started. I work part-time in retail, and it was crazy sale day which left me quite miserable. I knew there was only thing to do but to text Mrs. Ferment to see if she was free for a get-together to lift my spirits and my blood-alcohol content. I mentioned that I’d like a Zombie to match the glassy-eyed shoppers surrounding me. Unfortunately, she said the drink was very complicated, and, one other major problem, we had no rum.

A bottle of Prusser’s rumLike seeing the Bat-Signal in the sky, I sprang into action. I went to my local liquor store only to find five shelves of rum to choose from. I hadn’t thought it would be such a tough decision, considering rum and Diet Coke is one of my favorite go to drinks. Eventually, I decided on Pusser’s rum, based on it’s moderate price, $30, and it’s interesting history. I figured Fervere could write about it.

Once I got to DnU HQ, it was determined that one rum wasn’t enough for a Zombie. So now what cocktail to drink? Fervere, always prepared, whipped out his Bartender’s Bible, and I flipped through 30 pages of rum drinks. I am a light-weight when it comes to cocktails. I tend to go for the easy-drinking and sweet, rather than the slow-sipping of a strong burn. But, I surprised myself by deciding on a Corkscrew, a strong drink.

Someone needs to take these pictures before we start drinking them.

Corkscrew

  • 2 oz. rum
  • 1 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 oz. dry vermouth
  • enough ice to fill a third of a cocktail shaker

Combine all ingredients and shake. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon peel.

The star of the show of the Corkscrew in color and flavor was the rum. As I brought it to my lips there was a moderate amount of alcohol vapor but not enough to turn my nose. Let’s make no mistake—it was a strong drink. I sipped it slowly, but I really enjoyed it. There was just enough spice from the rum and sweetness from schnapps to please my palate.

So a thumbs up to the Corkscrew. It’s a good alternative to the over-saturated Cosmo. I would absolutely order one if I was out on the town and the bartender knew how to make it.
